| Preparation on Upper Campus for the New Engineering Building | 15 Oct 2010 |
| Date posted: 15th October 2010
The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment is in the final planning phase for the construction of the new engineering building which is to be built on the south side of the Chemical Engineering Building. The new building will house the Department of Civil Engineering and various research groups from Chemical Engineering. Before the construction of the new building can begin the Civil Engineering laboratories will have to be demolished. From 29 October the contractors will be moving on to campus to prepare for the demolition of the laboratories. This will affect people who park in P12 as it will be fenced off for the contractors. Heavy trucks and containers will be in P12 to remove the equipment from the laboratories. A fence will be erected around the site for health and safety issues. The relocation of ICTS to the Main Road has freed up 137 parking bays which will assist with the lack of parking in P12. Early in 2011, some members of Economics and the Department of Student Affairs will be moving to middle campus, freeing up additional parking bays. It is proposed that the demolition will take place from 18 November to 15 December 2010. The contractors are waiting for final approval before they can advise the actual start date. From 12 January to the end of February the excavation of the site will take place and the actual building will commence after the June exams. All reasonable precautions will be put in place by the contractors, in accordance with the law for health and safety at construction sites and the immediate surrounding environs. The UCT community is requested to observe all safety signs and to co-operate fully by respecting the clearly demarcated alternate pedestrian and car routes on these sites. We apologise for the inconvenience but would like to assure you that the contractors are working closely with us to ensure that there is as little disruption as possible. |
